ABOUT THE INITIATIVE
BEYOND THE WALLS Reading & Reentry Initiative is a free educational reading program of The Brown Financial Freedom Foundation Inc. It connects financial literacy, educational reading, and practical reentry planning for people affected by incarceration, returning citizens, their families, and community supporters.

Start with the free issue above, then use the foundation reading guide below to turn ideas into a personal action plan. Families, educators, and reentry organizations can use these prompts for individual reflection or group discussion.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPLORE
The featured issue includes financial education, entrepreneurship, reentry resources, legal research, and mental wellness topics. The foundation's reading guide emphasizes everyday money skills, careful evaluation of information, realistic goals, and preparation for a next chapter.

FOUNDATION READING GUIDE
1. Build a first-month budget.
List reliable income separately from hoped-for income. Write down essential expenses such as housing, food, transportation, identification documents, phone access, and medication. Subtract expenses from reliable income. If there is a gap, identify one cost you can reduce and one community resource you can contact. Do not include sensitive account information in a shared worksheet.

2. Choose a manageable money goal.
Pick one concrete goal: compare bank account fees, understand a credit report, save a small emergency cushion, or prepare questions for a financial education session. Write a next step you can complete this week and the information you need first. Distinguish saving for essentials from risking money in an investment.

3. Make a reentry resource checklist.
Identify the documents, transportation, housing contacts, employment resources, education options, and support relationships you may need. For each resource, record its official contact information, eligibility requirements, cost if any, and your next follow-up step. Verify that services are currently available before relying on them.

4. Read with questions.
Choose an article and summarize its main idea in your own words. What is a fact, an opinion, or a personal experience? What information would you verify before acting? When reading about investing or day trading, consider the possibility of loss, fees, and whether money is needed for essential expenses. This program does not promise income or investment returns.

5. Plan one supportive conversation.
Write down one question to discuss with a trusted family member, educator, case manager, or qualified professional. Legal information in a publication is a starting point for research; confirm rules for the relevant jurisdiction and seek qualified legal assistance for a specific case.

ACCESS AND PARTICIPATION
This launch provides free online access to the featured issue. People inside correctional facilities may have limited internet access. Families and service providers should check the facility's current publication and delivery rules before attempting to share materials.
